Ted Cruz Confronts Pelosi’s Role in National Guard Decision During Heated Senate Hearing

In a fiery Senate hearing that has captured widespread attention, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) delivered a sharp critique of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s role in the deployment of the National Guard on January 6, 2021. The tense exchange took place during the confirmation hearings for FBI Director nominee Kash Patel, drawing renewed scrutiny to Capitol security decisions made on that fateful day.

Key Testimony on National Guard Deployment
During the hearing, Kash Patel, who previously served as chief of staff to acting Secretary of Defense Christopher C. Miller, provided crucial testimony about pre-riot security preparations. When questioned by Cruz about the timeline of National Guard mobilization, Patel recounted discussions that took place in the days leading up to January 6. He revealed that officials had explored the possibility of deploying up to 20,000 National Guard troops to ensure security.

“We were preparing well in advance, coordinating at the highest levels of government to secure the Capitol, should a formal request be made,” Patel stated. His testimony indicated that despite federal security officials’ readiness to provide reinforcements, those offers were repeatedly declined.

Who Turned Down the Help?
Cruz pressed Patel on who had the authority to accept or decline National Guard assistance. Patel explained that multiple offers were extended to the Capitol Police, yet each proposal was turned down. Notably, he highlighted that the House Sergeant at Arms—who operates under the authority of the Speaker of the House—rejected the offer for additional troops.

Cruz then sharpened his focus on Pelosi’s involvement. “And the House Sergeant at Arms reports directly to the Speaker of the House, correct?” he asked. Patel confirmed this, making it clear that Pelosi was at the center of those security decisions.

DC Mayor’s Role in the Security Response
Further intensifying the discussion, Cruz inquired about Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s stance on National Guard support. Patel disclosed that Bowser had formally declined additional troops, submitting her decision in writing before the events of January 6.

“To be clear, a declination means she explicitly said, ‘No, we do not need the National Guard,’” Patel clarified. His statement raised additional concerns about why security reinforcements were rejected by key decision-makers ahead of the unrest.

Political Fallout and Renewed Debate
Cruz’s line of questioning has sparked fresh debate over who bears responsibility for security failures during the Capitol riot. Critics argue that Pelosi’s office and local leaders had the opportunity to bolster security but chose not to act. Supporters of Pelosi counter that security decisions involved multiple agencies and that the riot’s severity was underestimated.

Regardless of political stance, the hearing shed new light on the critical choices made before January 6. With Patel’s testimony now widely circulated, the controversy surrounding National Guard deployment remains a heated topic in Washington, likely fueling further investigations and political discussions in the months ahead.
