Donald Trump reportedly says Elon Musk will ‘step down from his role’ in US government ‘soon’

Trump Confirms Musk’s Upcoming Departure from Government Role

Donald Trump has reportedly stated that Elon Musk will soon be stepping away from his role with the U.S. government. While Trump has expressed satisfaction with Musk’s cost-cutting initiatives, he expects Musk to “step back” in the coming weeks. Musk had previously shared with Fox News’ Brett Baier that he believed he could reduce the U.S. government budget by $1 trillion within 130 days, a goal that would see him finishing by the end of May.

Musk’s position as a “special government employee” limits his work with the federal government to 130 days per year, making his time in the White House intended to be temporary. His Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is scheduled to wrap up by July 4, 2026, unless extended.

Trump Discusses Musk’s Departure with Cabinet

Politico reports that Trump has been discussing Musk’s upcoming departure, sharing with cabinet members that Musk would soon be stepping away from his governmental role to return to his business ventures. Sources close to Trump suggested that while Musk might still have a supporting role, he will no longer be a regular part of the administration in the future.

Trump Open to Keeping Musk Longer

However, it seems that this isn’t the complete end of Trump and Musk’s collaboration. On March 31, Trump remarked that at some point, Musk would likely want to return to his company, but added that if Musk were willing, he would want to keep him involved for as long as possible.

A White House spokesperson reinforced this sentiment on April 1, stating, “As the President said, this White House would love to keep Elon around for as long as possible. Elon has been instrumental in executing the President’s agenda, and will continue this good work until the President says otherwise.”

Impact of Musk’s Ties with Trump Administration

Musk’s association with the Trump administration has led to some negative consequences, including a decline in Tesla sales globally. Trump even held an unusual demonstration on the White House lawn, criticizing the “radical left” while claiming he was purchasing a Tesla.
