Rapper Who Funneled Millions In Illegal Donations to Obama Campaign Jailed
Grammy-winning rapper Prakazrel “Pras” Michel of the Fugees was sentenced to 14 years in prison for channeling foreign money into Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. Convicted on 10 counts, including conspiracy and acting as an unregistered foreign agent, Michel faced a high-profile trial featuring testimony from Leonardo DiCaprio and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Prosecutors argued he “betrayed his country for money” and said sentencing guidelines could justify a life sentence. His defense lawyer, Peter Zeidenberg, called the punishment excessive and vowed to appeal, insisting that even three years would have been more appropriate.

Michel’s legal team argued that prosecutors were pushing for a penalty normally reserved for terrorism or major cartel crimes. They said the government’s stance highlighted how federal guidelines can be stretched to produce unreasonable results. While the legal battle continues, political discussions connected to the broader Democratic landscape resurfaced. Former President Obama recently urged Democrats to avoid internal ideological tests and instead welcome a wide range of voices, including democratic socialists such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, whom he described as part of the party’s future vision.

Mamdani’s election on a socialist platform—supporting higher taxes on corporations, a rent freeze, free childcare, and city-owned grocery stores—comes amid shifting attitudes within the Democratic base. A recent Gallup poll showed only 42% of Democrats view capitalism positively, while 66% favor socialism. Commentator Chris Cillizza warned that this trend could hurt Democratic chances in the 2028 election, arguing that socialism, regardless of its branding, remains a difficult sell nationwide.
